Start of season – Big Cod

The fishing season starts in mid-February with fishing for the migratory Skrei cod, which swims to the Norwegian coast from the Barents Sea. The sea around Söröya is one of the absolute best places, where even the world record was caught.

Most of the fishing takes place relatively close to land, about 3-10 nautical miles from the camp, and there are usually plenty of large fish. The Skrei cod is also a fantastic food fish of the highest quality.

The Skrei season lasts from mid-February to the end of April. In worse weather, fishing for halibut in nearshore areas is often possible, as well as good fishing for large plaice and large dab just outside the harbor.

During Skrei fishing, there are often plenty of capelin around the fishing spots, often followed by dolphins, humpback whales, and fin whales, adding an extra natural experience to the fishing.

Spring/Summer

Halibut and mixed fishing

From mid-April to August, the fishing is more varied with a greater focus on halibut, but still really good cod fishing, with the chance to catch large cod and fine eating fish.

In good weather, long trips are usually organized to legendary places such as Storskalltaren, Rosa, and Kamöysundet.

The deep edges around Söröya also hold record-sized redfish, and it is possible to catch fish between 7-10 kg, which is an amazing size so close to land. This is also a good period for pollock, catfish, ling, haddock, plaice, and dab.

Autumn – Massive Halibut

In autumn, the focus is primarily on halibut, which move into shallower waters as the temperature drops. Spin fishing with sand eel jigs between 100-150 grams is very popular and effective. For targeting larger fish, many choose to bait fish with natural bait, often whole pollock.

October is typically the month when the most 150 cm+ halibut are caught, and the quantity of fish is also generally very good. In bad weather, fishing for plaice is productive as they gather in the autumn ahead of the upcoming spawning season. Plaice are usually quite plump and well-fed in autumn, an underrated sport fish that requires finesse to entice a bite and puts up a good fight.

Cod fishing can be fantastic in autumn, and certain banks often yield very large fish over 20 kg for those interested in more varied fishing. For example, in October 2020, two cod over 30 kg were landed from the Sörvaer Gjestehus boats.
